I just recently discovered that I’m a millennial. It was more like I had this “come to Jesus” moment when I was sitting at a networking event I frequently attend. I started frantically googling “what age is a millennial” and soon discovered that I technically fall into that category. I was shocked.

I just turned 32 last weekend, but please… Stop talking about my age like it matters. I often hear “oh my gosh, you’re so young” and “I can’t believe you’ve accomplished so much with as young as you are!” There was even one guy who called me “kiddo.” I almost lost it. Why does my age matter? Why does it matter if I’m 86 or 32? I often get frustrated by people who focus on the number of years I’ve been alive on this planet. It’s not like I haven’t done anything with my 32 “short” years. I can  assure you they’ve been packed full of adventure and excitement. I’d like to think of myself as a seasoned life specialist since I’ve been exposed to more things than most people. And no, not all of it was good.

I wrote this blog about baby boomers in 2013. I asked (politely) to please cut my generation some slack. The world is a very different place than it was when retirement programs were implemented. And I think we’re not giving this new and upcoming generation enough credit for what they’re accomplishing today. Do you want to know what we got as a result of the Great Depression and a war? Baby Boomers and Medicare.

Anyway, I think society should stop focusing on the age of people and focus more on what they are accomplishing- EVEN THE MILLENNIALS.  I know. It’s going to be hard. The millennial generation is starting to show up to the game after recovering from Bush-era policies that kept us back. In fact, the millennial generation is the next largest home-buying group since the baby boomers.

The next time you talk to a millennial please remember the following things: we’re human, we have brains and lives and it’s OK to talk to us like the aforementioned people we are and not what you think about us.
